State of the Game: November

↫ State of the Game ↬

The days grow shorter, and a chill has set into the wind, which seems to be blowing with more callousness, or maybe that's just the general perception around town. Truly, the residents seem to be more short-tempered of late, and no one seems to be sure why.

Those who have a psychic sensitivity may get a sense of a growing unease in the locals, almost as though the city is primed for something, and not something good. They've taken to hanging prisms from their front stoops, in windows, over shop doors, and in market stalls, urging the outlanders, that's all of you, to do the same. If questioned, they claim they're ward stones, to keep the spirits from meddling in the affairs of the living.

For those of you who have spent more than one autumn and winter in Aterat, it seems strange. They've never mentioned something like this before.

The first snow flurries, albeit rare, will begin to fall around mid-November but without a frozen ground to stick upon, it soon melts, leaving much of the non-cobbled avenues a slushy, muddy mess. The storm clouds that bring the snow leave the days overcast and the nights bitingly chill.

It's sweater weather, and maybe someone should think about hot chocolate…

Administration-wise, activity check is up, the Test Drive Meme is still available and the prompts there can be used for current players as well, through November!
I always encourage people to use the Content Submission and Plot Requests pages, either to suggest events or to request information for characters to explore respectively. Enjoy the setting and engage with it! Aterat grows with your interaction!
Event: Must Be Reaped
(The Reaping, Part 2)

It becomes clear as the month shifts from October to November that the locals might have been on to something. The mood seems to lighten as the days go on, at least for the natives of Aterat. For the newcomers, though, things may not be as smooth. It really depends on how you choose to spend your time.

It begins as an impression, a feeling that maybe you're not as alone as you believe yourself to be, then progresses to a shadow over your shoulder in the mirror as you're shaving or brushing your teeth. Then, later, that shadow might be following you home, or to the store.

The days go by like this, ever more plagued by the shadow that may or may not be trailing you, until there, around a corner, or in your living room, is the specter itself: it could be someone from home who's passed on, someone you haven't seen for years, or someone you saw only yesterday. It could be someone you know here, or someone you've known elsewhere, but one thing remains consistent with them: they stay. They stay and they are someone you feel you owe something to, be it an explanation, an apology, an acknowledgement of gratitude.

They don't speak, don't sit, don't react in any way when spoken to, but stare forward as though they don't see you.

There are two ways to get rid of them and the feelings: you can take the opportunity to confess whatever it is you feel you need to, which will dispel them, but will leave you with the at times overwhelming need to tell someone else about it, or you can seek the company of others. The specters seem to disappear when in groups of at least two, and spending time with those people seems to keep them away for a time.

It seems when surrounded by friends or strangers, the need to tell them grows, but once the message is shared, you feel lighter, that is unless you leave as soon as the confession is delivered. No, it seems the best idea is to spend time with those you've come to call friends or loved ones, enjoying their company.

If questioned, locals will encourage this, or at least to ward them away with the same prisms they've all begun to favor, though you'll be cautioned this will only protect one place from the visitation, not a person, not even if a prism is carried.

If you any any questions, as always, ask them here!
