STOG; December-January

↫ State of the Game ↬

As November transitions to December, the temperatures continue to drop and the days continue to shorten. Snow flurries begin, but only toward the end of the month are temperatures such that the snow can accumulate, leaving much of the month a slushy, miserable mess. The tempers of the natives reflect the bleak weather, leaving them less tolerant of the outsiders who've come to call this place home. Even the chocobos are more temperamental.

Which means the recent broadcast leaves everyone on edge, perhaps even more so than they normally would be. Who were those voices? What did they mean? What does it have to do with your character? Those questions will be answered in January.

This is a month for tests.

But we'll discuss those in a moment. First, a few admin things:

One, we have a shiny new Winter Test Drive Meme, which as usual contains prompts for prospective and current players. Current characters are free to use any of the prompts in the TDM for posts through February, when the Spring TDM will go live in March.

Two, in regards to Check-In, I know my mental capacity drops in November and December, so there will be no Check-In for November or December. We'll resume regular monthly Check-Ins in February, for the month of January.

I always encourage people to use the Content Submission and Plot Requests pages, either to suggest events or to request information for characters to explore respectively. Enjoy the setting and engage with it! Aterat grows with your interaction!

Event: A Black Waltz (Part 1)

As the strange voices over the Tell Phone said, residents are to be tested, or more to the point, the strength of their souls are to be measured. Why is yet to be seen, but the way of it makes itself apparent in the most random of ways.

You may find yourself walking home late at night, the glow of the street lamps illuminating your path, only for them to begin to extinguish one at a time, coming closer and closer until you're left in darkness, only to feel hot breath on your neck and a whispered secret you'd rather left buried. Running in a panic to somewhere safe may leave you warding off poltergeists all evening, whether you find someone to shelter with or not, while facing the sudden fear and confessing the whispered secret to someone nearby may reward you with a strange glowing marble at your feet.

You may alternatively find yourself cornered on a side street by strange mechanical creatures. They attack in groups of two or three, some wielding elemental magicks such as fire or ice, some armed with small bows and arrows, and some wielding very sharp axes. They can be evaded if you choose, they won't pursue you far, though they may shout insults about you either true or false in mechanical voices. They'll continue to show up to taunt you as well, at least until their claims are either confirmed or denied to someone else. Fight them, though, and be rewarded with a glowing marble upon their defeat. The reward is individual, meaning anyone who helps will also receive their own marble.

And what are these marbles? Why, they're crystalized magic and each contains a specific spell. Some are green and allow the bearer to cast one, specific elemental magic spell (such as a ball of fire, a wave of water, a damaging whirlwind, a bolt of lightning, a blast of sub-freezing air and ice). Others are purple and make the bearer stronger, faster, or more durable. You can receive any one of these, but only one.

Characters can assist or face multiple instances in which a reward could be won, but the marble (some may call them Materia) can only be won once.

As a side-note: there is a new jeweler with a kiosk in the market who sells rings, necklaces, and earrings with empty sockets in them in which these marbles seem to fit perfectly; a convenient way to carry around your new one-trick spell, isn't it?

If you any any questions, as always, ask them here, and as always, use this post to plot. Have fun and Happy Holidays!
