WELCOME TO ATERAT

Here is our Seventh Test Drive Meme! There are a lot of areas of the city to explore, so please have a look around! In case you need a little help getting started, I've included a few prompts below, or feel free to start your own! Exploration and player initiative are the names of the game here!

I. Crash Into Me

Not exactly, but close enough. You have just arrived and received a strange satchel from a tiny, strange little man and are left more or less to your own devices (more information on what to expect upon arrival can be found here)! Follow directions to the north and check out the housing, or maybe have a look around the Historium and try to get some information from that giant glowing ball, see what you can waste your meager starter coin on in the Market District, or maybe just meet the neighbors.

II. What Goes Bump in the Night

It looks like Aterat proper has a spirit problem. Maybe you're seeing specters, hearing disembodied voices, your windows rattle when there's no breeze outside. Maybe there are cold spots in your place of business (or your apartment, which is so much worse). Either way, you're 100% convinced you're haunted. Hopefully, someone else believes you, or maybe you're used to feeling crazy.

III. Into the MirrorVerse?

Through the looking glass in every apartment or other residence lies the MirrorVerse, a place of emotion. More information on this mysterious place can be found here.

The Tell-Phone allows for text, video, and audio transmissions to everyone else who has one. Give it a whirl!

[ The boy is actually somewhat pleased she didn’t ask. Explaining his… thing… to people tends to get varied reactions in his experience. At least she doesn’t seem to mind the static, so that’s a win. ]

You’re welcome. [ An awkward pause, staring for a moment as he thought about the monotone voice. ] It’s kinda random when people get here, so they might appear too if they’re not already.

[ Yin is, mostly, incapable of minding much, so if that plays out in Mono's favor at the moment, then it is good. ]

[ She gives a nod to show she has taken in the information and understands. But now she has a question. ]

How long have you been here? [ It's not like her to ask, to even wonder, but Yin actually feels a speck of curiosity building at all of the new input. ]

[ Mono thinks it’s probably good to be curious, at least when you just get here. It’s such a confusing place, depending on what you’re used to. Though her question gets another stare, drawn out longer and accompanied by that odd static fizzling in and out. His ability to track time isn’t the greatest. He never had to before being here. ]

There’s been two winters since I got here… So I guess it’s kinda been a while.

[ Patiently, Yin stares right back. She doesn't push, doesn't press, doesn't even twitch or blink, even when the static interrupts them for a brief moment. ]

[ Two winters still implies somewhere between a year and two, so a decent amount of time. Mono probably knows what he is talking about. She might find that comforting, if she could find comfort in things. ]

Do people only come, or do they also leave?

[ The boy didn’t need too long to answer at least, the bonus of being here as long as he had… He could at least answer questions like this. ]

People do leave sometimes. I guess the world sends them home? It’s kinda just as random as people arriving. Also, sometimes people go home for only a week, but it’s longer for them, then they come back…?

[ Sounds like the place lives by its own set of whims, but Yin doesn't think too deeply or much about the response. There's a level of gratitude, though it feels subdued, and she fails to verbalize it. ]

[ Yin does pause for a moment, lips slightly parted, as though she wants to ask another question, but it doesn't seem to form, for a while. When she manages the words, they maintain an even, steady pace. ]

What do you do here?

Me?

[ Mono gets a lot of questions from new arrivals, but he isn’t sure he’s been asked that one before. ]

I deliver letters and stuff for Minimoff Deliveries in the market and the noble district. So that. And exploring, I guess?

[The boy clearly wasn’t entirely sure if either of those was the right answer, but he hoped it was the right one. ]

[Yin doesn't think there's a wrong way to answer this question, because she was just interested in hearing the answer - actual interest. She herself isn't sure she can offer this new place anything, but if Mono makes deliveries, maybe she can find a place she just sells little items, like back home. Something she already knows how to do.]

[She speaks evenly and carefully as she asks another question.]

What do you explore?

Kinda all over? [ The boy knows the city quite well, at least what there was of it at the moment. ] There’s a lot of old empty places that don’t got people yet, and sometimes places that were never here before just appear over night so then there’s a new place to see. Like the magic academy place that’s just outside the city.

[ This place seems odd. Yin hasn't been to a place that just changes over night like this before. She also notes Mono's experience is good. He probably knows the place very well. ]

[ She's quiet for a while, absorbing the information. Why is there an academy like that? Can just anyone learn magic? ]

Does it teach magic?

Kinda? There’s three people that’ve been trying to fix it up to teach people magic. I go there sometimes and a couple of them try to help me figure out how to use my power better.

What kind of powers do you have?

[Was he some sort of Contractor? Didn't seem like it. But he could be a Doll, like her.]

[ He’s never sure what to say exactly, if only because he wasn’t sure what the right words for some things were. ]

Umm… I can kinda skip forward when I’m walking? Like first I’m in one place walking, then suddenly I’m extra steps ahead without trying too hard. And I can make stuff break, or less broken if I’m lucky… But mostly break stuff.

[ It’s been a work in progress, really. But breaking stuff wasn’t always bad, he helped by breaking something once. ]

I can also use TVs to go places, but there aren’t any TVs here right now, so I can’t practice that.

[Breaking stuff could very much come in handy, at least in the jobs Yin has been involved in. Mono sounds useful from that perspective.]

Only TVs. So not Tell-phones? [Yin tilts her head as she considers that, full of curiosity. Why some technological devices and not others?]

I think, maybe? I dunno for sure. There were only TVs to try with in my world, and the tell-phone screens are kinda… small compared to them? I’m afraid I might get stuck if I try.

[ The kid thinks that is a slightly scary mental image. ]

[ Yeah, even to Yin, that sounds scary. ]

Don't try. [ She frowns at the thought of it, her hand running over the device, her finger obscuring view for a second as it brushes over the camera. ] They are not very big.

I won’t, I don’t like being stuck. [ A lot, being stuck in one place was terrible. He watched as she disappeared from the screen and came back again before nodding. ] Yeah! I didn’t even know screens could be that small before.

I didn't know they could be big.

[Of course, she's not even sure how small they are without her hands.]

Really? Stuffs kinda different sized here compared to where I’m from too. [ Mono had noticed that the scale here was very different from the Pale City. Maybe it was different in Yin’s world, too. ] So maybe it’s just a different world stuff.
