TEST DRIVE 001

Welcome to Aterat!

Here is our first ever Test Drive Meme! There are a lot of areas of the city to explore, so please have a look around! In case you need a little help getting started, I've included a few prompts below, or feel free to start your own! Exploration and player initiative are the names of the game here!

NOTE: While you do need an invite to apply to the game, you do NOT need one to tag or top level on the Test Drive!

Helpful Links to Get Started

Arrival & General Information | Locations & Bestiary | Residences & Housing Info | Rules & FAQ (ask questions here!)

A. Welcome to the Jungle

The URBAN jungle, that is. You have just arrived and received a strange satchel from a tiny, strange little man and are left more or less to your own devices (more information on what to expect upon arrival can be found here)! Follow directions to the north and check out the housing, or maybe have a look around the Historium, see what you can waste your meager starter coin on in the Market District, or maybe just meet the neighbors.

B. We've Got Fun and Games

At least there's entertainment. In various parts of the city, there are street performers, slight of hand tricksters, and probably a game or two of poker in one tavern or another (there are several to be found, after all). Start up a game of darts, or just sit broodily in a corner and watch the others coming and going.

C. You can have anything you want but you better not take it for free

The Harbor District is a rough joint. There are pickpockets, swindlers, but also hardworking folk and more than a few buildings that seem to be locked. It sure would be a shame if someone were to go about performing some casual Breaking & Entering...you know, as long as you don't get caught. There are guards around, though not nearly as many here as in the other districts. It's almost as though they like to avoid the place. People talk about wererats in the shadows at night and it's not unheard of for the unaware to go missing when they're traveling around here after dark...

D. What's that smell?

As if being carted off to what looks like a city out of a video game weren't bad enough, there's an entire district to the northeast that seems to be walled off, warded, and in all ways inaccessible. According to the sign, it's the cemetery...and boy does it smell.

E. Speaking Crystal

You could always take a look at the instructions that came with your crystal and see who else is listening. Remember, though, these devices are Voice Only and cannot be filtered. If you speak, anyone with a crystal can and will hear you. Now, whether or not they choose to respond is another thing entirely.

If you have any questions at all about setting or what is or isn't acceptable, please submit it on the FAQ!

If you would like to explore any aspect of the setting more indepth, please PM the mod account OR comment here! All comments are screened!

His ruffled feathers seemed to lay down a bit as she gave him her name. He didn't know what the other two words were, but he did give a sound of confirmation that he was only in it for a bit of sightseeing. He decided to stick around to see what she was doing as she started drawing, speaking in the same low voice, though with some of the irritation removed.

"It's always good practice to know the quickest path out of a sticky situation, should you ever need one." He paused, then added mischievously, "we may need one here, anyway."

The drawing of the door made him doubtful, but his curiosity was piqued. A doodle wasn't a door, no matter how much she wanted it to be one, so what, exactly, was she--was that a real door? With a doodle and a whisper, was that a real door in front of them? He gave her a dubious expression as he reached out and touched the door, feeling wood very much under his fingers where it wasn't before. His palm fell flat against the wood as he took a step up to it, his hand wrapping around the door knob. He glanced back at her once more, giving her that same dubious expression, then he turned the handle.

The door swung in on well-oiled hinges without even a whisper. His eyes widened in surprise and he looked back at her. He moved aside and encouraged her inside, then closed the door quietly behind them before a guard could see what was happening. Once the door latched again he couldn't stop the words from tumbling out of his mouth.

"How did you do that?"

He stood with his back against a door that wasn't originally a door, eyeing her with a curiosity that betrayed his critical demeanor.

Cass mulled Uldren's words over a bit, and nodded. "You do have a point. Step back from the door a moment, please?"

If he obeyed or if he didn't, she released the rote making said door a door--any patrollers would be much less likely to realize someone had infiltrated the warehouse if there was a chalk drawing there. A true door where one should not be, on the other hand...

"Magick," Cass replied, quite honestly. She wouldn't tell a human such things, but Uldren--certainly seemed to be not quite, though Cass wouldn't comment on it. "Mine can redefine reality. I convinced that part of the wall that it was actually a door--for a few moments, in any case. I could do it for longer, maybe even indefinitely, but I didn't want to chance any visits from any friendly guardsmen, you understand."

She walked further into the warehouse, setting a tiny globe of light to hover over her head and give her a bette chance to look around the area. She knew it had to be somewhere--hidden, likely, but present nonetheless. Cass' lips flattened to a thin line as she searched.

He hesitated before moving, but acquiesced to the request after taking a moment to consider it. He watched the door that wasn't a door turn back into a wall, and he reached out to touch the wall, checking to make sure that it was truly back to it's old solid self. His hand lingered on the wall as she explained about the Magick, his hand dropping as she finished her explanation and he looked to her as she started to walk further into the warehouse.

"My people, we are called the Awoken, have some ability. We are not able to turn a wall into a door, but we have the ability to make things float, some have telepathic powers... There's more, but it requires quite a bit of training." Not that hers didn't. He wandered after her to move into the building, then split off to look around.

"What are you looking for, exactly?" He started to dust off some of the labels on boxes he was near, but had no cause to start popping them open quite yet.

"Awoken?" Cass huffed, a slightly amused sound, then. "Odd. That's what my type of mage is called. Awakened. Long story, that, though I might explain more later."

To him, at least. Most other humans don't get that benefit of the doubt, but then he was an Awoken. Likely not a threat. Or not an overt one, in any case.

"It will reek. It will be in the form of a brick. It's called opium in my world, and it's a drug that sends the user into dreams or death depending on how much one takes. I'd rather see it transformed into something else. Not a drug, either. Something more...useful."

There might be a small amount worth saving for medication, but even then Cass was likely to try to find alternative means--in her mind, that brick was just too dangerous to leave alone.

Her kind of mage being called awakened caught his ear. He listened to her quietly as he moved from box to box where he was, looking for something that might be tucked away somewhere hidden. He let her finish, was quiet for a few moments longer, then he chose to speak. "I'm Awoken, you're awakened. Sounds like we were fated to be together." He sounded a bit sarcastic.

He noticed that it had fallen quiet except for whatever sounds he made, and he stopped to look at her. As he noticed her expression his face would harden and he would almost physically bristle. "What?"

She shook her head, snorting a bit. "I'd believe that if I could clearly see the strands of your fate. But my sight slips off you. Why that is, I do not know, but..." Cass shrugged. There was a good chance that if she had time, she might get a firmer grasp, but at the moment, there were other, more important matters to attend to.

A musty, too-sweet greenish-brown scent assailed her nostrils, and Cass crouched, pawing through a number of smaller boxes stashed under a desk. She drew back with a smaller, leather-encased miniature suitcase, and paused only to open it. Briefly, a bar of brown substance was exposed--it looked something like a low quality brownie, but Cass knew that she'd just found the objective of her search.

"Now to extract it. Though we need to be extra careful on our way out--or cool our heels here, while the guardsmen pass." With that, Cass extinguished the light orb she'd created with a thought--no need to tempt fate, after all.
